High Cholesterol Treatment at Home and in Our Office

Posted on: April 16, 2018

A high cholesterol treatment is necessary for anyone who has been diagnosed with having high amounts of cholesterol in the blood. Without treatment, this can lead to a heart attack. Since heart disease is one of the leading killers in the United States, this is not something to ignore or simply hope will go away. Instead, it is critical that patients be proactive in treating high cholesterol in order to get it at manageable levels.

What causes high cholesterol?

Cholesterol can be increased by eating foods with animal fat. Also, some vegetable oils are high in cholesterol. Some of the food to avoid are:

  • Cheese, milk, and cream
  • Lard
  • Butter and ghee
  • Red meat
  • Palm oil
  • Hard margarine
  • Pies and rich biscuits

Additionally, some people are predisposed to having higher cholesterol because of their DNA. In other words, if there is a family history of high cholesterol, it is even more important for patients to visit our office and have their cholesterol tested on a regular basis.

Is treating cholesterol really important?

Absolutely. This is something that cannot be ignored since it can lead to a heart attack. It does so by restricting the blood flow. Since blood flow is necessary for the heart and brain functions, any restriction increases the likelihood of someone suffering a serious health problem like a heart attack or stroke.

What can be done at home?

Once a high cholesterol treatment has begun in our office, there are things patients can do to help and lower their cholesterol level. We recommend starting with a heart-healthy diet. Some of the foods people can eat to help lower cholesterol are:

  • Fiber, including fiber cereal
  • Oat bran
  • Lentils
  • Black beans
  • Black-eyed peas
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Mango
  • Tofu
  • Unsalted nuts
  • Pinto beans
  • Okra
  • Citrus fruits

These are just a few of the things that can be incorporated into a person's daily diet to help lower their cholesterol. Just remember that any of these foods should be eaten without salt since salt can increase cholesterol and raise blood pressure.

What is involved in a high cholesterol treatment?

Typically, treatment will involve taking medication like a statin or other cholesterol medication. Additionally, it is necessary to make specific dietary changes in order to reduce the amount of cholesterol that is being consumed and to begin eating some of the healthy foods mentioned above. Exercise is also going to be important for maintaining blood flow and heart health.

We may also advise that patients add healthy fats to their diet such as the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon. Eating bananas is another easy way to help reduce cholesterol because bananas can assist in removing it from the digestive system.

Will the cholesterol treatment be needed forever?

When starting a high cholesterol treatment many patients want to know if they will always need to be on medication. The answer is that it depends on the individual patient. Some people need the medication initially in order to lower their cholesterol but after making dietary changes, they are able to get it under control.
